!   WEST COAST COMMENTARY... from Dan & Smith     !
+===========================================+

GILMAN:
We did a fairly long set and the crowd was awesome.  Midnight Lazerbeam was in really good shape.  The bill included a great grindcore outfit called Brain Oil that rocked, plus a pretty cool opening band from Portland as well.  Good sound, lots of old friends, and tons of new homes found for CD's & shirts.  Overall, a great show for us even by Gilman's steep standards. The kids just never cease to amaze us. Special guest stars included Hunk, the lads from Replicator, and Bill's little brother.

BOTTOM OF THE HILL:
A shorter set in the middle of the bill, with MLB opening and new wave/cabaret heads The Vanishing following up.  All in all, a surprisingly pleasant Sunday gig in San Francisco.   Playing a little earlier was fun, and definitely lowered my level of stress.  I feel like we've finally rebuilt a little respect in this city - and we should get back up there soon.  Extra thanks to The Vanishing for setting the show up and for rocking our asses! Special guest stars included Leonard Lippman, Sam Atakra, Giluiana's old pal Luke, and the amazing Mike Cho.

THE VISTA:
Eureka continues to be a fairly charming place, in it's own totally low-fi, DIY way. This was a small show, but very fun.  A lot of the old faces seem to have left town, but we actually had a good time here.  Candy Muscle provided a spirited opening set, and this was my favorite MLB set of the tour.  This is definitely a scene that enjoys having unusual bands in town, and one that we look forward to visiting again soon. Thanks again to Michelle from Panache for putting the show together - and letting us sleep on her floor! Also, thanks to Mark McKenna for the amazing photos.

THE BLACKBIRD:
Many of our worst feelings about the city of Portland were completely reinforced.  There is definitely something negative going on up there that is just hard to drill down through.  Then again, we did have a booker, an opening act, and a small core of local fans that were excited about the show. Prospects definitely look better for the future, and we have more friends up there now than before. We have no choice but to return and beat them into submission.

THE CAT WALK:
Seattle is amazing.  Our friends up there really worked to make this show special, and technically speaking it was by far the best planned and promoted event of the tour. Then again, so much effort on their part almost left us with an equally huge sensation of responsibility, which made this show a little more serious than the others.  The legendary DRE opened the show with his new band, Amalgamus, and MLB sounded great. Illness made this show a bit of a struggle, and the Catwalk space seemed a little too big, but all in all it was a satisfying event. Thanks to Mike and Musicwerks for taking a chance on the show and for the much needed Indian food! And we can't forget the incredible Robin.

THE PIC:
Playing in Vancouver for the first time was a great experience. It was encouraging to see so many people up there who were excited to see us - many for the first time. The Picadilly Pub is a nice little pub with a small but comfortable stage and an almost ideal layout for our show. The problem with this event was the loss of both A Luna Red (membership problems) and Midnight Lazerbeam (not allowed to enter Canada) from the bill, but fortunately for us, local indie rock outfit Go Go Stomp did a great job in picking up the show at the last minute and giving us some excellent opening band support. Sara worked her but off for this show, and without her, it would have all fallen apart. Thanks also to Steve from Fireball Productions for helping us get over the border...legally.
